Masters
of Arts in Earth Literacy: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana:
This program is interdisciplinary which teaches students to develop an
ecological worldview and put it into practice. The program is at Catholic
Institution, run by the Sisters of Providence. It works from a Christian
framework, though it is open to other beliefs. Taught via intensive/distance
learning with option for taking program in residency. Students can supplement
by taking either undergraduate courses in theology or graduate courses
in pastoral theology. Located on 1200 acres of land which include a nunnery,
a beautifully landscaped campus with lots of churches and chapels, organic
gardens, woodlands, a lake and the White
Violet Eco-Justice center a Christian-environmental organization.
Post-Masters
Certificate in Ecology and Theology: School of Theology and Ministry at
Seattle University:
Seattle School of Theology is a Jesuit Institution and the Eco-theology
program is partially run by the Sacred Universe Program. A total of 5-6
courses are needed to complete this program. It teaches "theological
reflection" on ecological and environmental issues. Courses deal
with techniques in Earth ministry, development of ecological liturgy,
human-nature relationships and sacred cosmology, with opportunities for
developing Christian fellowship and community. Prerequisite: masters
degree
Ecology
and Theology Concentration: Elliott Allen Institute for Theology and Ecology
(EAITE), Toronto Theology Institute, Toronto University:
Supplements a masters degree in either in Divinity, Ministry, Religious
Education, Pastoral Theology or Theological Studies with several courses
in environmental studies. Students in this program are required to
take a capstone course in eco-theology.
Graduate
Certificate in Science and Religion: Boston Theological Institute, Boston
University:
The purpose of this program is to provide already established scientists
or theologians or practicing Christians basic literacy skills to
develop a common language to develop effective dialogue between science
and
religion. A concentration on theology and ecology is available.
Sophia
Center, Center for Culture and Spirituality, Holy Names College, Oakland
California:
Holy Names is an independent Catholic School. This program's
purpose is basically to create an Earth friendly religion using
knowledge from
Judeo-Christian thought, feminist theology, Eastern religion, native
and
endemic people's, physics, biology, cosmology, deep ecology, spirituality,
psychology, and culture critique to discern the state of man and
interpret the spiritual nature of the universe. Course titles includes
Science
and
Mysticism, Cosmos and Consciousness, and Geo-Justice. It has a
strong New Age emphasis. Offers degrees or short terms stays.
Master
Program with Graduate Certificate in Earth Literacy: Genesis Farm in New
Jersey, connected to Saint Thomas University in Florida:
This program is founded upon the teachings of Thomas Berry,
Mathew Fox and Berry Swine. Genesis Farm in run by the Dominican
Order of
the Catholic Church. It works on the premise that the Earth is
a living organism
and that human beings serve as the Earth's nervous system. Students
develop a new Creation story and learn about environmental issues
as they work
on an organic farm and prepare food in a kitchen. Students can
get full masters with a cooperative program with St. Thomas University.
The Biblical
basis is questionable.
Graduate
Certificate in Ecology and the Human Spirit: Institute for Pastoral Ministries,
Saint Thomas University, Florida:
This program is also from the same college that has based their
whole curriculum on the teachings of Thomas Berry, Mathew Fox
and Berry
Swine. This program organizes such things as trips to study
the Bioregion of Assisi Italy, as well as integrate ecological
concepts
in to all
aspects
of the curriculum. Works from Creation spirituality model.
Masters
of Science in Animals and Public Policy: Tufts University, Massachusetts:
This is a secular institution, but one of the few shows in
town if you want to study animal issues from a non-scientific
prospective.
Animals
and Public Policy is a rigorous interdisciplinary program
dedicated to the study of animal issues. Students can study
animal issues
like
wildlife
management and animal cruelty, from such diverse prospectives
as ethics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, law, political
science,
ethology,
philosophy, world history and comparative literature. For
one required tutorial, students can opt on Animal and Religion.
Masters
in Environmental Ethics and Animal Welfare: Colorado State University:
For Christians going into the environmental studies,
eco-theology, or environmental advocacy field, a graduate
degree in environmental
ethics is a viable option. It would give you an understanding
of environmental beliefs, and teach techniques in cultural
critique and paradigm shifting.
It would also explore the ethical and moral implications
of environmental issues. Colorado State University has
the most
complete and oldest
program
in Environmental Studies in the country with options in
a wide-variety of environmental degrees. Holmes Ralston,
an
esteemed environmental
ethicist, and a practicing Christian is a big name in this
department, meaning
research
opportunities in Christian environmental ethics.
Masters
and Ph.D.: The Graduate Theological Union, Berkley California
Masters and Ph.D.s are available in religious environmental
or science and faith areas, supported by the Center
for Theology and the Natural Sciences and Center
for Ethics and Social Policy.
