I specialize in the systematics and zoogeography of monogenean parasites infecting the gills of marine fishes. I am particularly interested in those infecting deep-sea fishes and sharks of the Sea of Cortez. I have authored, or co-authored five scientific papers describing eleven new species of monogeneans, and currently serves as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Comparative Parasitology.
I developed and directs the Biola Baja Program offered each Interterm: An extended field trip to Baja California, Mexico to study plants, marine mammals, birds, and intertidal marine organisms at the Vermilion Sea Field Station.
I served as chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences for more than 20 years. I teach General Ecology, Human Ecology, Marine Biology, Parasitology, the Natural History of Marine Mammals, and Ornithology, several sections of First Year Seminar, and advise the freshman Biology, Human Biology, and Biochemistry majors. I am fascinated with the differences in how people perceive nature. I am particularly interested in exploring the relationships between science, art and nature. I am passionate about Creation Care.
