Notes from Au Sable

Global Opportunity

If you're looking for a way to broaden the horizons of your environmental education, this year's Au Sable Institute summer sessions allow students to choose from courses at one or more of the institute's five locations in North America, Africa and Asia.

Summer Session I
During Summer Session I (June 3-July 7), courses will be offered at the Pacific Rim, East Coast and India sites, as well as Au Sable-Great Lakes.

  • Pacific Rim: In addition to Natural History of the Pacific Northwest and Marine Invertebrates, offered in 1998, there will be two new courses at Au Sable-Pacific Rim amid breathtaking scenery and ecological diversity on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, Wash. The new courses are Ecotheology and Marine Stewardship.
  • East Coast: On Tangier Island, Va., in Chesapeake Bay, new courses for Summer Session I will be Natural History of the Chesapeake and Stewardship Practicum: Sustainable Communities and Environmental Conflict Resolution on the Chesapeake Bay. Students will experience natural history, a unique fishing community and the role that Christian environmental stewardship can play in these interactions.
  • India: At Bishop Heber College in Tiruchirapalli, Au Sable-India will offer Land Resources of South India, Natural Resources Practicum: Environmental Stewardship in India, Conservation Biology and Environmentally Sustainable Development and Mangrove Ecosystem Ecology. South India provides a rich natural and cultural setting for environmental studies.

Summer Session II
During Summer Session II (July 13-Aug. 14), courses will be offered at the Pacific Rim and Africa locations, in addition to Au Sable-Great Lakes.

  • Pacific Rim: Field Geology of the Pacific Northwest, Ecological Agriculture, Field Botany and Marine Mammals will be offered at Pacific Rim during Summer Session II.
  • Africa: Courses to be taught during Summer Session II at Au Sable-Africa are Birds of the African Tropics, Tropical Botany, Mammals of East Africa and Natural Resources Practicum: Development and Ecological Sustainability in Africa. These courses will be offered in cooperation with the African Institute of Science and Resource Development at its facility near the Great Rift Valley in Kenya.
