Spring 2000: Community Programs - Pacific Rim

Eager Welcome

Since Au Sable's purchase of an abandoned state-owned game farm on Whidbey Island for the institute's Pacific Rim campus, the local community has shown enthusiastic support.

On three separate occasions, twice last fall and once this spring, youth and adults from Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church have volunteered for work parties. Up to 35 people labored to remove fencing from around several existing buildings that had been used to raise pheasants. More work bees are planned.

Residents of the island are helping in other ways-maintaining trails, mapping and suppressing invasive weeds in the remnant prairie and building a local fund-raising base on Whidbey Island.
