Spring 2002

From the Director: The Importance of Forum 2002
By Cal DeWitt, Director

A significant international event this summer will bring a Christian perspective to bear on one of the most challenging issues of our time -- one with serious implications for our children and our children's children.

Forum 2002 will address the vital issue of global climate change in relation to Christian faith, witness, and service. Organized jointly by The John Ray Initiative (UK) and Au Sable, it will be held in Oxford, England July 14-17, 2002.

Climate change has been debated for over a decade, and continues to concern leading scientists, policymakers, and non-governmental organizations. It affects matters of health, hunger, relief, development, poverty, violence and social conflict, freedom and justice - which are of deep concern for Christian efforts to proclaim the Gospel and care for our neighbors worldwide.

Forum 2002 will bring the voices of responsible, informed, and faithful Christians into the public conversation on climate change. Participants will meet with religious leaders, prominent scientists, and policymakers of international stature to discuss the science of global climate change and its potential consequences; national policies and international agreements proposed for dealing with it; the theological and ethical principles that apply; and practical Christian responses.

Forum 2002 will seek to articulate a faithful Christian response that links the care of the earth to the core doctrines of creation, redemption, resurrection, and Christ's return. We pray for God's blessing of wisdom on this event, and ask your prayers for the Forum as well.
