Great Lakes
Pond Study
Offered May & September
Appropriate Age Level: 3rd - 4th grade
The
pond study is also a beginning ecology study, which examines how energy
flows through an ecosystem. This study may be chosen to learn about food
chains, food webs, and carrying capacity. In addition, this study teaches
that food chains leak energy, which enables students to develop the concept
of food pyramids. Students collect plants and animals from our near-by
pond and later get a chance to examine their finds more closely using
hand lenses and microscopes. The pond organisms are used to reinforce
the concepts of the unit. The importance of wetlands and habitat preservation
is emphasized. As with all our studies, environmental stewardship is
the major theme. Basic
