Wildlife Study
Offered February
Appropriate Age Level: 3rd - 4th grade

This is the beginning ecology study which examines how energy flows through an ecosystem. Students learn about food chains, food webs, and carrying capacity by participating in activities and simulations. Students learn that all wildlife need unpolluted food, clean water, clean air, shelter, and space. If any one of these elements is limited for a species, then the numberof individuals of that species will be restricted. In this context, students learn what causes some species to be endangered of becoming extinct.
Students hike through a variety of habitats to conduct a wildlife census. Usually weather conditions require snowshoes (which Au Sable provides). The data the students gather are used to pull together the concepts of the unit. Basic Ecology
