Winter Study
Offered February
Appropriate Age Level: 5th - 12th Grade

Hypothermia and its prevention is the focus of this unit. As a survival skill, students learn to observe their winter environment. Clouds, wind direction as well as weather instrument readings help students make simple weather forecasts. Students learn to have a sense of direction by learning how to use a magnetic compass and participating in orienteering exercises. Students also learn how to build a fire in snowy conditions and learn other survival techniques. This unit is designed to give students the information and skills to fully enjoy the magnificent winters of northern Michigan. Basic Ecology
