Winter Study

Appropriate Age Level: 5th - 12th Grade
Hypothermia
and its prevention is the focus of this unit. As a survival skill, students
learn to observe their winter environment. Clouds, wind direction as
well as weather instrument readings help students make simple weather
forecasts. Students learn to have a sense of direction by learning how
to use a magnetic compass and participating in orienteering exercises.
Students also learn how to build a fire in snowy conditions and learn
other survival techniques. This unit is designed to give students the
information and skills to fully enjoy the magnificent winters of northern
