Community Program

Pacific Rim

The Community Program on Whidbey Island is developing interactively with the community and community organizations on our new 175-acre site, purchased on June 30, 1999 from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Renovation of facilities and site preparation is underway, with the support of over 100 community volunteers, to provide for Institute courses and for meeting places and a system of trails for use by the community and environmental organizations. These include an auditorium, classrooms and dining hall, trails through forest and forest ecotone and a trail to the last remaining high quality glacial outwash prairie remnant in the region from which seeds are being harvested to create an extensive restored prairie.

Community use of the site includes regular use by community residents for hiking, nature study and relaxation and by various environmental and community organizations. Organizations who utilize or are involved in various ways with the site include the Whidbey Audubon Society, the Washington Native Plant Society, The Nature Conservancy, The Wilderness Society (Pacific Northwest Section), the National Parks and Conservation Association (Pacific Regional Office), the Coupeville Art Center, and the Ebey's Landing Trust Board..
