Pacific Rim Summer Lecture Series

The Pacific Rim is happy to announce its tentative schedule for the summer lecture series.  Lectures are held on Wednesday evenings in the summer in the auditorium, and last about 45 minutes.  Refreshments are served afterwords.  These lectures are open to Au Sable students, staff, and the community.

Wednesday 14 June – Global Warming: Fact or Fiction?  Dr. Tom Ackerman; Chief Scientist for ARM, the U.S. Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory;  Graduated in Physics from Calvin College and received a MS and PhD from the University of Washington in Physics and Atmospheric Sciences.  Dr. Ackerman is a former member of the NASA Ames Research Team.

Wednesday 21 June – How New Plant Species are Discovered and Described.  Dr. Neil Snow; Associate Professor of Biology and Botany; Curator of UNC Herbarium; University of Northern Colorado

Wednesday 28 June – The Burning Season – How Fire Shaped the American Landscape.  Dr. Randy Van Dragt; Professor of Biology at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI; Director of Calvin College Ecosystem Preserve; Currently doing a six-month sabbatical at Au Sable Pacific Rim on prairie restoration/propagation.

Wednesday 05 July – Don’t be Lunch! Anti-predation Strategies of Plants and Animals.  Dr. Joseph K. Sheldon; Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Messiah College, Grantham, PA

Wednesday 12 July – NO LECTURE (break between SS I and SS II)

Wednesday 19 July – A Journey Through Our Solar System.  Prof. Tom Hillman; Assistant Professor of Geology; Whitworth College, Spokane, WA

Wednesday 26 July – Forest as Sacred Grove: Religion and Genetic Engineering.  Dr. David K. Foster; Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science; Messiah College, Grantham, PA
