There’s no better way to begin a conservation internship than by getting your hands in the soil! Last week, a new group of interns arrived at Au Sable Institute to begin the Church and Community Conservation Internship, a nine-month partnership between Au Sable and A Rocha USA. Their first week was a mix of orientation, exploration, and plenty of time in the field. Interns met with staff from both organizations, learned more about the work they’ll be part of, settled into their roles, and began getting to know the communities and landscapes of northern Michigan.
They’re already putting that learning into practice. This fall, the interns will work alongside Au Sable staff to help deliver our REYS and Sacred Grounds programs, including helping churches install native plant gardens and participating in native plant rescue efforts. A trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offered a chance to step back, explore, and take in some of the incredible landscapes that make this region such a special place to do conservation work. In mid-November, the interns will transition to A Rocha USA, where they’ll continue working with partners in one of A Rocha’s regional hubs in Austin or Nashville. Their journey will continue through May, giving them a unique opportunity to experience conservation as both a local and community-centered calling.
