Hello, my name is Liani Montzerrat Lujan. I grew up in Laredo, Texas and graduated from John Brown University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in biology. I wanted to participate in this internship because I have a deep love for creation care and hope to develop the skills needed to educate others on why they should care about environmental issues.
My hobbies include reading, writing, hiking, and learning new things. I’m interested in pretty much anything related to the environment and learning about different cultures.
Growing up in a semi-desert, much of my environmental surroundings were not described as picturesque by most. However, I came to understand that God created all things, and therefore, all things, including the desert, have inherent value. Due to my faith, I believe it is my responsibility to care for the Earth and I look forward to the ways that this internship will guide me through this journey.
I hope to have a future career in the development of sustainable forensic science. In order to get there, I believe a deep understanding of the environment and the scientific processes that enable it is essential. I also believe that knowing how to teach these things is just as important and aim to develop this skill through my time at Au Sable.
My most memorable experience so far has been exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes with the other interns and a former ranger of the lakeshore. It was such a privilege to get to see the landshore through the perspective of someone who has a wealth of knowledge and appreciation for it. This experience gave me a glimpse into what my future could look like if I continue to nurture my own love for the environment.
I have been blessed with the privilege of visiting Northern Michigan, through my time with the Au Sable Institute as a student, alum, and summer staff employee, several times, so I am excited to join the other interns as they get to explore some of my favorite places in the area for the first time.
After my time at Au Sable, I’ll be heading to Austin, Texas where I’ll get to work alongside the A Rocha team on some of their ongoing projects in the area. I’m most excited to work with their “Picnics en el Arroyo” program, which serves to connect Hispanic families with local green spaces.
