Summer 2024 - Food Service (4 positions)

Food Service — Four (4) full-time food service positions at the Au Sable Institute campus in northern Michigan from mid-May through mid-August. Au Sable serves as a science field station for students from 53 Christian colleges through the US and Canada. We offer a supportive community in a beautiful setting surrounded by forests, rivers, and lakes.

Food service positions will be responsible for all tasks involved in preparing and serving food as well as the upkeep of the kitchen/dining facility under the supervision of the Food Service Manager and Director of Support Services. Food service staff will be responsible to make nutritious meals from scratch in a timely manner for approximately 20-60 people. They will be required to follow food safety standards while prepping ingredients, following recipes and handling and storing food. They will have a hospitality role introducing meals and engaging positively with members and guests of the AuSable community. They can expect to work 35-45 hours per week. Schedules are rotating and days worked change week to week.

Qualifications

  • Must be passionate about food and extending a pleasurable eating experience to others.

  • Must be responsible, trustworthy, teachable, organized and have an attention to detail.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work on your feet for 8 hour shifts.

  • Must work adequately under time pressures and constraints.

  • Preferably have a valid driver’s license.

  • Preferably have some experience in cooking, baking, food prep, following recipes and/or be in an academic culinary or nutrition program.

Wage and Benefits

Wage will be $10.10 per hour for the first 40 hours each week, time and a half for additional hours in the same week. Housing and meals are provided. A typical food service employee will earn approximately $6,000 during the summer.
