Calvin University's Life in Winter course hosted at Au Sable

This January, Au Sable hosted Calvin University’s Life in Winter course, taught by Dr. Randall DeJong and Dr. Dave Warners. The class explored the remarkable adaptations that allow organisms to survive—and even flourish—through winter’s challenges. Students also examined how humans, including indigenous communities, have long learned to live well in cold climates, and reflected on how each of us can personally thrive during the winter season.

Their time in Northern Michigan was full of firsts. The group tried downhill luge and ice skating in Muskegon, hiked through an old‑growth forest, and spent time downhill skiing. Here at Au Sable, they snowshoed, cross‑country skied, built quinzhees, and enjoyed an opportunity to view snowflakes up close. They also had a meaningful conversation with Eric Bond and Bob Barr about life in Northern Michigan.

Thank you, Randall, Dave, and the Calvin students, for spending time at Au Sable this snowy season!
