Fun facts: The genus name Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos which means ‘hedgehog’ or ‘sea urchin;’ this is a nod to the plant's spiny, knob-like central cone. Pale purple coneflowers develop a massive, deep taproot that makes it remarkably drought-tolerant. It is capable of surviving hot, windy prairies, though it strongly resents being transplanted once established. If you grow them from seed, they usually take about three years to reach blooming maturity.
