Fun facts: Black Eyed Susan is the state flower of Maryland. The Genus name, Rudbekia, is named after famous Swedish botanist Olof Rudbeck Junior. Black Eyed Susans are great dragon-fly attractors which is a good thing because dragon-flies love to eat mosquitos. This flower has been used in traditional herbal medicine and is a good remedy for earaches. Its roots were commonly used by indigenous peoples for tea or medicine. Black Eyed Susans are pioneer species meaning they can grow after wild fires or other natural disasters to make way for other plants and prepare the soil.
