Fun facts: Even though this plant is called a petunia, it is not a real petunia; it belongs to a different family, the Acanthus family, whereas actual petunias are in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The flowers on this plant have a one day lifespan; each individual flower opens at dawn and lasts for just a single day before dropping off by afternoon or evening. When the plant’s dry, straw-colored seed capsules ripen and split open, they do so with a forceful “pop” that audibly shoots the seeds away from the parent plant to self-seed.
