Fun facts: This plant gives off a sweet, licorice scent when crushed or in bloom during late summer and fall. Some say this plant seems to dance; with its long and slender stems, the wind can make the plant sway and ‘dance.’ It is nicknamed tall tickseed because its small, dark, flattened seeds resemble tiny ticks. Indigenous peoples like the Meskwaki historically used the stems to brew tea for treating internal bleeding. Despite looking fragile and spindly, it handles drought, heat, humidity, and poor soils well. It can also be trimmed back by 50% in late April to control its towering size.
