The genus name ‘Potentilla’ comes from the Latin word ‘potens,’ meaning “powerful,” a nod to the plant’s historical and reputed medicinal uses. Tannins, which are polyphenolic compounds used to make wine and other foods, are found in the leaves of this plant and are used to feed camels. This plant is very, very tough; known to survive in extreme conditions such as the Tibetan Plateau, which is the world's largest plateau. It can survive at altitudes as high as 11,000 feet.
