Fun facts: This plant set the record for being the tallest grown sunflower, growing all the way up to 35 feet, 9 inches. Because the plant grew so tall, the grower had to build a custom-made scaffold and use ladders to reach and measure the flower head. Young sunflower buds actively track the movement of the sun from east to west across the sky every day. A single “flower” head is actually a cluster of hundreds to thousands of tiny individual flowers. The center has dozens of tiny disc florets while the outer yellow “petals” are ray florets. These plants are good at cleaning up the soil where they live, they can absorb heavy metals and toxins - such as lead, arsenic, and even nuclear radiation - from contaminated soil.
