Fun facts: The wavy-lined emerald moth caterpillar attaches bits of plant material to its body to hide on the coneflower. Showy coneflower is a very popular garden plant in New England but it is not native there. It is naturally found growing in damp areas, stream edges, bottomland forests, and roadsides, particularly centered around the Great Lakes region and extending down the Mississippi River. Once the bright yellow petals drop and the seed heads dry out in autumn, songbirds flock to the plants to devour the seeds.
