Fun facts: Despite looking like this plant has petals, on its 1 inch white flowers there are actually colored sepals surrounding a cluster of stamens. The genus name ‘Anemone’ comes from the Greek word ‘anemos’ which means wind; linked to old beliefs that the flowers would only open when the wind blew. Like all members of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested in large quantities and fresh sap can cause skin irritation. The roots release a chemical called protoanemonin which can actively stop nearby plant seeds from germinating. The Cherokee tribe used root infusions to treat whooping cough. The Iroquois tribe used it as a love medicine, a treatment for diarrhea and tuberculosis, or for ritual purposes. The Meskwaki tribe smoked the seed pods and blew the smoke into the nostrils of unconscious people to revive them.
