Fun facts: Plains tribes like the Omaha, Lakota, and Ponca historically used the spiny dried seeds heads of the coneflower as makeshift hairbrushes. Children in the Pawnee tribe used the long flower stalks as toys by whirling two stalks together until the flower heads touched. Plant specimens of the coneflower were gathered during the historic Lewis and Clark expedition and mailed to President Thomas Jefferson. Early settlers in Oklahoma used coneflower remedies not just for humans but also administered the plant in the feed of horses and cows that were sick or lacking appetite.
